Unlocking Collective Ownership for Community Led Solar Projects

What is racial capitalism? How is Cleveland Owns flipping the script on traditional modes of capitalism? And building up communities in the process? Take a listen to find out where these ideas meet clean energy and are in motion in our communities today...

Jonathan Welle is an organizer at Cleveland Owns, a nonprofit that incubates cooperative businesses. He is incubating two community-led solar groups, The BC in Hough, a mostly Black neighborhood on Cleveland's east side, and The Cleveland Solar Cooperative.

These groups are using collective ownership of solar finance mechanisms and solar arrays to promote a just transition to a clean energy economy.

Jonathan has worked as a small business development advisor in the Peace Corps, as a Regional Field Director with President Obama’s reelection campaign, and as a business consultant with McKinsey & Company, where he worked with corporate and public-sector clients in financial turnarounds and revitalizing organizational culture.

He has a master’s in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School. Jonathan grew up in Mayfield, Ohio, and boomeranged back to the City of Cleveland in 2015.
